Shou's bit in this chapter is referencing The Imperial Navy. Godzilla vs. Biollante is another reference, of course. The “indie movie” is probably referencing Ultraman: Towards the Future, released direct-to-video in Japan as “Ultraman G”. Takano Koichi (Japanese) directed special effects for that film.
